Legal Newsline taps Kelly Scott on navigating new paid sick leave requirements in Los Angeles and Santa Monica

07.12.2016

In a July 6th feature story by Legal Newsline, "New sick leave laws in L.A., Santa Monica could boost class actions," Kelly Scott weighs in on the new law's implications from the employer's perspective.

In Los Angeles, the new law commenced on July 1 and allows all employees to use up to 48 hours of sick time a year. If unused, those hours must carry over to the following year.  In Santa Monica, the law requires sick time to accrue at a rate of one hour per 30 hours worked, or the total amount can be distributed at the start of the year.

Asked to comment due to his seasoned expertise in employment law, ECJ partner Kelly Scott explains that these new regulations expose businesses to many potential class action suits if the employer fails to comply. This, according to Scott, will only heighten employer frustration and the cost of doing business in California.
